Magic the gathering card combo question?

Double strike doesn't mean it just deals twice the damage. It means it actually deals damage on two separate occasions. The first strike damage will hit, Spike will trigger, resolve, and half your opponent's life. Then it'll hit again with normal damage and Spike will half it again.
